Underwater Pond Lighting

Submersible Halogen and LED Lights for Water Features

Aug 28, 2009 Tricia Edgar

Use submersible halogen and LED lights as landscaping lights to highlight underwater or pond side features.

Submersible pond lights have historically been used as security lights around docks and marinas. However, they are increasingly used as landscape lighting, particularly in the home pond. Underwater lights allow the pond owner to continue enjoying a pond at times when it is dark outside.

Why Use Underwater Lighting?

For those who use their yard space most often in the evening hours, pond side lights or submersible pond lights extend the viewing time of the pond. It’s possible to see fish moving in the water and aquatic insects landing on the water even when it is dark outside. Become a night time bat watcher, aquatic boatman enthusiast, and carp viewer, or simply enjoy a hot beverage on a cool fall evening by the pond.

Striking Ways to Light Up the Pond

Pond lights can be used in several ways. They can be used as a ring around a fountain, to add dramatic highlights to an existing water feature. They can also be used to focus the eye on underwater life. Lights that surround the pond can also highlight aquatic or pond side vegetation. It’s a whole other world of light, shadow and color, and the pond owner can play with a new palette of textures, lights, and shapes when playing with underwater and pond side lighting.

Submersible LED Lights for the Pond

For those who are looking for a low-energy solution to create an inviting night time pond environment, LED lights are that solution. Compared to the traditional halogen lights, LED lights use up to 90% less energy. They are available in several styles, and as the LED technology continues to change, the styles of lights will only increase. LED lighting is available in colors, in ring lights, and in automatic changing bright LEDs. One of the more popular brands is the mini LED Egglite, which is a small and efficient light suitable for small backyard ponds.

Underwater Bulbs are for In-Pond Lighting Only

Underwater bulbs are in a sealed compartment so that the light can be submerged. Traditional halogens create a lot of heat. This heat disperses through the pond. These lights are designed to be underwater, so they should not be used as pond side lighting.

Choosing and Installing Underwater Lighting

Choose lights wisely. Less can be more when it comes to dramatic pond and underwater lighting. Even one light can illuminate a lot of space. Choose a plant or a water feature as the focal point of the pond. Mount lights with brackets to ensure that the lights are pointing in the right direction, or else they will give a stunning view of the bottom of the pond.

Underwater lights are a pond and garden decoration that can be beautiful if used with discretion. Treat the pond as an art piece, and decide what places to highlight with the brush of a colored or white pond light.
